Written by Reno native Ryan Costella, Democracy Suicide is an allegory comprised of 17 poems that will be performed by four actors in the roles of Reason, Right, Left and Tyranny. Together, the 17 poems compose a parable involving four characters—played by Reno actors Rod Hearn (Reason), Jessica Johnson (Right), Moira Bengochea (Left) and Bradford Ka’ai’ai (Tyranny). The story begins with idealism and gradually reveals more polarization and extremism. It eventually reaches a breaking point, resulting in civil war and the death of Reason. As Tyranny rises in victory, audience members are forced to consider their role in the tragedy and determine whether Reason can be resurrected, or authoritarianism will win the day and cause the death of democracy. Democracy Suicide will be presented as a live stage reading at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at The Theatre, 505 Keystone Ave. The performance will be followed by a talkback with the cast. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.ticketleap.events/tickets/democracy-suicide/democracy-suicide-reno. Go to www.instagram.com/democracysuicide for more info.
